Knitting Pattern: Kodit Cowl (by Tiia Reho)

The cowl is knitted in the round, with openings in the center to make it easier to wear.

The Kodit cowl pattern was first published in the Beloved Patterns & Erik Bruun knitting magazine, inspired by Finnish graphic designer Erik Bruun’s iconic posters.

Knitting pattern details:

Sizes:

1 (2, 3, 4, 5)

As the size of the shawl increases, both its width and the length of the neck section grow. If you prefer a wider scarf but have a narrow neck, use the measurement of a smaller size for the neck section before the opening. The scarf is designed to sit loosely around the neck. The sample is knitted in size 3.

Finished measurements:

Width: 12 (15, 17, 20, 23) cm / 4.75 (6, 6.75, 8, 9.25)˝

Full length when stretched: 87 (90, 93, 96, 99) cm / 34.25 (35.5, 36.5, 37.75, 39)˝

Length of the neck section: 66 (68, 70, 72, 74) cm / 26 (26.75, 27.5, 28.25. 29.25)˝

Yarn:

Vuonue Rescue Elsa (70 % Finnish sheep wool, 30 % wool recycled in Finland, 360 m (390 yds) / 100 g).

MC: Utö 1 (2, 2, 2, 2) skein(s) or 350 (415, 490, 565, 650) m / 385 (455, 535, 620, 710) yds.

Note that you need three separate balls of MC (or take one thread from the outside of a ball, the second from the inside, and the third one from a second ball.)

CC: Naantali 1 (1, 1, 1, 1) skein or 26 (31, 36, 42, 49) m / 29 (34, 40, 46, 54) yds.

Needles:

3 mm / US 2.5, 80 cm / 32˝ circular needle and 3 mm DPNs for the 3-needle bind-off.

Gauge:

22 sts × 32 rnds = 10 × 10 cm / 4 × 4˝ over Stockinette Stitch.

22 sts × 32 rnds = 10 × 10 cm / 4 × 4˝ over colorwork in the round.

Notions:

Stitch markers, darning needle, and waste yarn and 3 mm crochet hook for the provisional cast-on.
